Our mission is to improve the quality of our society through the involvement of youth in our community in educational programs used aboard a tall ship. The tall ship, as a foundation for educational programs, is a valuable and effective tool able to reach youth from all areas of our community. Through the tall ship experience we are able to more effectively bring about change in the at-risk youth population as well as bring together differing cultures and population groups. We give them a new foundation from which to grow. The tall ship experience gives youth the opportunity to see the world from a completely new perspective, allowing them to reform and expand their view of the world. We offer an exciting and unique opportunity to explore a new world of experience. In addition we are able to introduce real world applications to traditional subjects such as science, mathematics, history, social studies and more. We know that you will see the benefit these programs will bring to our community and ask for your support in our efforts. |

The Facts of Life |

1. The cost to our society for a single high school drop-out over the course of a lifetime is estimated at over two million dollars. 2. Even if it is only a tenth of that amount, it still costs our society $200,000 for every dysfunctional person. 3. The current cost in the State of California for locking up a juvenile for one year is $98,000. 4. For $98,000 per year you could send a kid to the finest University, supply books and expenses, hire a full time tutor and rent an off-campus apartment. 5. 70% of all inmates will return to prison after their release. 6. Investing in our children now will give a return that is invaluable financially and will help to improve every aspect of our society. |

Educating for Life

The Institute is currently working on four programs to be used in Ventura County aboard the Tall Ship. Through cooperation with our sister organization, the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, (LAMI) we have modeled one of those programs after their highly successful TopSail Youth program. The Institute will also operate educational programs in cooperation with other local organizations. Each organization serves a group with its own individual background, needs and problems. By creating programs based on the needs of a specific group, we will be more effective. |
The Plan |
The American Tall Ship Institute is currently raising the funds necessary to purchase the Schooner “Bill Of Rights.” We intend to dock the vessel in Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, California. This location is perfect for day sails in the Santa Barbara Channel as well as for overnight trips to the Channel Islands. We are currently developing programs for the Ventura Maritime Museum, Oxnard College, The Boy Scouts, and more. We are counting on concerned people like you to help us in our efforts to change the lives of young people. The most obvious lesson we have to learn from the tall ship is that by working together we can accomplish what seems to be impossible.
